For Armour, I agree it wouldn't survive direct hits from 125mm guns in the original armour configuration (frontal turret was only designed to protect against 30mm cannons). There are several uparmouring packages that can be applied. Canadians used MEXAS in Afghanistan with great success.
Firepower, If they are using the Leo 1A5 with the upgraded FCS and thermal, I can't see how they would be at a loss. I once saw a 105mm service sabot go right through the front of a T72 and out the back end (through the engine block) at 2km. That gun has a first round hit success rate at 3km. I can't see how that wouldn't be effective.
I would say mobility is superior to the T72 and T80. The Leopard is faster and easier to maintain and service than the T72/80s. It doesn't burn fuel nearly as much as the T72 either. I once saw a Sgt jump his Leo C2 while shooting.... that beast can move.
I do agree there would be a training lag but if that had been started 2 months ago, we wouldn't be in this mess. Taking trained tankers and cross training on a leopard would take like 4 weeks. Especially since you aren't teaching raw recruits or basic tactics.
Sending Leo 1A5s would be a huge help to the Ukrainian Army.
